Along with equipment sterilization, preventive measures and protective attire, surface disinfection is vital in helping to maintain a safe and clean environment.
According to the CDC, surfaces "can become contaminated with infectious agents and contribute to the spread of health-care-associated infections." Furthermore, the risk of cross-contamination is present for patients and staff within the dental operatory. The transmission of germs can occur when hands come into contact with non-critical equipment or surfaces that have been contaminated or have not received proper surface disinfection. While staff members should also maintain a proper hand hygiene routine, the CDC states that using a surface disinfectant "will provide antimicrobial activity that is likely to be achieved with minimal additional cost or work," acting as a quick yet effective solution to the threat of cross-contamination. In addition to the minimal cost and ease of using surface disinfectants, having a quick contact time is also extremely beneficial to staff members when turning over a dental operatory.
The CDC recommends that surfaces be "disinfected with an EPA-registered low or intermediate-level disinfectant." Metrex products, available exclusively through Kerr TotalCare, include two types of multi-purpose, intermediate-level surface disinfectants, utilized in thousands of hospital facilities every day—CaviCide™ and CaviWipes™, or CaviCide1™ and CaviWipes1™. Designed to be fast and effective, CaviCide and CaviWipes require a contact time of three minutes, whereas the new generation of CaviCide1 and CaviWipes1 only require one minute for proper surface disinfection of labeled organisms. Despite the different contact times, Kerr TotalCare's various CaviCide products fundamentally share the same features and benefits. In addition to satisfying OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, all of the products in this leading line of dental surface disinfectants can help prevent cross-contamination and sustain a cleaner, safer environment. They are also conveniently available in a ready-to-use spray form or a wipe form. Effective against TB, HBV, HCV, HIV, viruses, and fungi, the CaviCide family offers one-step surface disinfection as a 3-in-1 product: cleaner, disinfectant and decontaminant. To help combat environmental contamination, Kerr TotalCare provides the #1 dental surface disinfectant on the market today, CaviCide and CaviWipes.
